The author (1856-1930) was an American linguist who learned 45 languages and devoted his life to prove the reliability of the Old Testament Bible. In 1883 he became Professor of the Old Testament at Western (Pittsburgh) Theological Seminary, and in 1900 the William Henry Green Professor of Semitic Languages and Old Testament Criticism at Princeton Theological Seminary. He opposed higher modern education scholarship criticism of the Bible throughout his career, stating, “I have come to the conviction that no man knows enough to attack the veracity of the Old Testament…(when challenged) the Biblical facts in the original text have victoriously met the test.”
