British historian Thomas Macaulay, who died on the eve of the American Civil War, wrote a warning to America predicting that our Republic might come under the power of a dictatorship, the alternative which he forecast was no less foreboding. He wrote “Your Republic will be fearfully plundered and laid waste by barbarians in the 20th Century as the Roman Empire was in the 5th with this difference – the latter was from without…the USA will be engendered from within, and by its own institutions!
